Resistance is Your Answer to Supple Thoracic Rotation
The therapist at Bodyharmonix can assess your thoracic spine mobility which may be just what you need to boost your boxing performance. Your posture, balance and control during a strike can be strengthened and be made smoother with a focus on thoracic rotation.
You can read more about the value of your physical condition with thoracic focus here.
Make strides in your mid-back mobility by loosening up of your shoulder musculature to enhance your strike sling back system. Your thoratic region is the convex area of your spine. It goes from the base of your neck to below your shoulder blades. This area has the architecture for rotation. Use it!
Benefits of Thoratic Rotation
Thoracic rotation will open your upper back and improve the flexibility of your muscle and tendons in the area. This creates greater force during a strike and enables a more natural pull-back following a strike. Also, loading of your exterior and interior obliques will provide a much more stable base during your punches.
How can you achieve this biomechanics marvel? Resistance training!
The short, fat and less mobile vertebrae of the thoracic area provide stability advantages. Resistance training for thoracic rotation will activate extensor muscles in the area. In turn this improve your posture, balance and joint gliding.
Resistance Band Training
Training with resistance bands or other resistance equipment will work your trapezius, latissimus dorsi, rhomboids and posterior serratus (superficial muscle groups), as well as your thoracic erector spinae, and at a deeper level, your transversospinalis muscles.
Attention to resistance exercises will upgrade movement through the transverse plane, which your muscles have a natural bias for.
Resistance bands and resisted rotations such as with overhead Y’s or use of a crossbar can develop your optimal striking performance. A smooth execution of a punch and pull-back requires training where you pay attention to both your stability and active control of your abs.
You can join a group session with Bodyharmonix to experience the benefits of resistance band training or you can get a full posture assessment to analyse and determine where in your body you need the most strengthening.
